GAME RECAPS

Saturday, 3:00 Game

UW-Stevens Point defeated UW-Whitewater 4-3 in the final game of the Midwest Regional in Whitewater to advance to the NCAA DIII World Series beginning next Friday in Appleton.  The Pointers struck first in the top half of the first inning scoring two; one on a ground out and the second on a balk.  UW-W cut the lead in half with an RBI single by Ben Kuhlmann in the bottom half of the frame.  UW-SP upped their lead to two in the top of the third on a solo homerun by Brad Archambeau, but UW-W tied the game in the bottom of the fourth scoring two on a Mike Kenseth single down the left field line.  Joel Delorit started the game for the Pointers but gave way to Scott Williams after five innings.  Williams held the Warhawks scoreless the remainder of the game.  Jason Hooper put forth a noble effort keeping the Pointers scoreless until the top of the ninth.  A leadoff double by Jordan Rennicke got things started for the Pointers.  Relief pitcher Ryan Iverson came in to pinch run for Rennicke and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Dan Douglas.  A gutsy suicide squeeze call from Pointer coach Pat Bloom with catcher Steve Considine at bat plated Iverson and gave the Pointers the late lead and eventually the victory.  Williams earned the win for the Pointers and improves to 10-2 for the season.  The Pointers will advance to the World Series boasting a 33-16 record while the Warhawks’ season will come to a close with a record of 42-7.

Saturday, 12:00 Game

UW-Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point either are trying to set a record for most games versus one opponent in a season or have decided that nine games isn’t enough to settle bragging rights.  The teams met for the ninth time this season Saturday afternoon, with UW-Whitewater staving off elimination and setting up the tenth and final meeting between the schools this year with a 9-3 win in the Midwest Regional.  Jeff Donovan’s two out home run, his thirteenth of the season, in the top of the first gave UW-W a 1-0 lead.  In the bottom of the first the Point leadoff reached on an error and Eric Fritz made the Warhawks pay with a run scoring double.  In the top of the fourth Travis Wessels plated two runs with his first home run of the season, put Whitewater in front 3-1.  UW-W broke the game open with five runs in the fifth.  Daniel Putnam had a RBI single, Donovan pushed two across with a single after runners moved to second and third with a balk, another scored on an error, and Wessels, with a RBI double, came through again to make the score 8-1 Whitewater.  In the bottom of the fifth Brad Archambeau brought in the Pointers’ second run with a double.  One inning later Jared Surman brought in the Pointers’ final run of the game with a double.  The first three batters in Whitewater’s half of the ninth reached base, and Rob Coe’s sacrifice fly concluded the scoring.  Riley Tincher, who has two wins and a save in the regional tournament, picked up the win to raise his record to 13-1.  Wessels went 3x4 for the Warhawks and Fritz was 3x5 for UW-SP.

Friday, 4:20 Game

With all the drama of an elimination game, both teams bringing in any available arm to stay alive and a total of 21 hits, Whitewater may have stayed alive because of three passed balls in their 5-4 win over Saint Thomas.  Jeff Donovan’s single in the top of the first brought in the first run.  The Warhawks added two more, both unearned, when Mike Kenseth singled in two in the fourth.  The Tommies responded in their half of the inning.  Tom Wippler and Roy Larson opened the frame with back-to-back doubles, and the second run of the inning scored on a Whitewater error to make it 3-2 UW-W.  With one out in the sixth, Whitewater’s Matt Beyer struck out but reached first base on a passed ball.  More crucial, Ben Kuhlmann scored on the play to give UW-W a 4-2 lead.  In the top of the seventh Warhawk Jordan Stine led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball, and then scored, with what proved to be the winning run, on a passed ball.  Saint Thomas had Whitewater on the ropes in the seventh.  Tom Wipler delivered a bases loaded single to score on run in the seventh.  Riley Tincher, who beat Aurora in game one of the regional, came on and gave up a single to Roy Larson to pull Saint Thomas to within 5-4, but Tincher got the last two outs without any more damage.  Whitewater used three pitchers, with relief pitcher Ben Versnik, 2-1, going three innings, his longest outing of the season.  Saint Thomas also used three hurlers.  Wippler and Matt  McQuillan led Saint Thomas batters, going 3x5.  Kenseth had three hits, 3x4, for Whitewater.  Whitewater and UW-Stevens Point will meet for the ninth time this season Saturday at 12:00.  That will tie the UW-Whitewater record for most games against one team in a season, which also occurred in 2005.  If Whitewater wins the first game the final game of the regional, and tenth in the UW-W versus UW-SP series, will be played at 3:00.

Friday, 1:00 Game

Both teams had a big inning, but it was Saint Thomas that added a couple of one run frames in a 7-5 win over Carthage College.  Saint Thomas didn’t waste any time, plating four runs in the top of the first inning.  Tom Wippler drove in three with his sixth home run of the season and the next batter, Roy Larson hit his fifth to put UST up 4-0.  The next scoring came with Carthage’s eruption, putting up five runs in the fourth.  Zach Kozlowski drove in the first run with a single, Billy Herrin brought one home with a single, and Trevor Whatley accounted for three with a bases loaded double to put Carthage ahead 5-4.  UST’s Wippler led off the fifth with his second home run of the game, and seventh of the season, to knot the contest at 5-5.  The Tommies made the Red Men pay for a defensive miscue when Matt Olson singled in the sixth run in the sixth, giving UST the lead for good.  Carthage loaded the bases in the eighth, but Brandon Stone came on in relief to induce a ground out to end the threat.  Saint Thomas added an insurance run in the ninth.  Matt Nelson, 7-0, picked up the win with Stone’s help and eighth save of the season.  Kozlowski led both team with a 3x4 day at the plate.

Friday, 10:00 Game

UW-Stevens Point evened the season series with UW-Whitewater at four games apiece with a 12-4 win Friday morning.  The Warhawks got out in front on a RBI single by Jeff Donovan in the first, and made it 2-0 with a run scoring single by Nick Rechlitz in the second.  But UW-SP made up the gap, and then some, with six runs in the third.  The Pointers combined six hits with one Warhawk error and a hit batter.  Brad Archambeau drove in two, Justin Jirschele one, Jeremy Richter one, Jordan Rennicke one, and Josh Krueger one to put UW-SP up 8-2.  Jirschele drove in another run with a single in the fourth and UW-SP added an unearned run to make it 10-2.  Whitewater’s Daniel Putnam singled in a pair in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-4, but was as close as the Warhawks would get.  Archambeau singled in his third RBI of the game in the seventh, Sam Spurney hit his seventh home run in the eighth, and the Pointers added two unearned runs in the ninth to close the scoring.  Archambeau led all hitters with a 4x5 game, adding two runs scored to his three RBI’s.  Tyler Lorenz, 6-5, went the distance for the Pointers.  Ben Kuhlmann was 3x5 for UW-W.

Thursday, 4:00 Game

Scott Williams and Kris Edwards owned this game.  Both pitchers would like to have one pitch back in complete game efforts, but that would be nit-picking what Stevens Point’s Williams and Saint Thomas’ Edwards accomplished in the Pointers’ 2-1 win.  With a brisk breeze blowing toward left and loaded lineups, Williams, 9-2, picked up the win and Edwards, 8-4, took a tough loss.  Here’s the pitch they would like back — and it was the only scoring either team could manage.  With one out in the top of the first Matt Olson hit his third home run of the year for Saint Thomas.  With two out in the bottom of the fourth Jeremy Richter drove in both of Point’s runs with a two run shot.  And that was it.  The two pitchers combined to allow just three walks in the game, with six strikeouts.  Saint Thomas managed eight hits, three by Olson, and UW-SP just four off of Edwards.

Thursday, 1:00 Game

A sacrifice fly and a two run home run by Rob Coe put three runs up on the board in the top of the first for UW-Whitewater, providing all the offense the Warhawks would need in a 6-2 win over Saint Scholastica.  UW-W added another tally on a solo home run by Matt Beyer, his seventh, in the second.  The Saints cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of inning number two, parlaying three singles and a ground out into a pair of runs.  Brandon Peterson had the clutch hit in the frame, a two run, two out single.  For the next six innings pitching took control of the game, with neither team able to score until the ninth.  In the top of the ninth Whitewater added the last two runs of the game, Jordan Stine providing one with his fourth home run of the season and the other aided by a Scholastica error.  Jason Hooper, 7-2, went seven innings for Whitewater, allowing four hits, two runs, one walk and striking out five.  Kyle Lee and Ben Versnik both pitched an inning of scoreless relief.  Stine went 4x5 to lead both teams.  Matt Lewis went eight and two-thirds for Saint Scholastica.

Thursday, 10:00 Game

Carthage scored early and late in a 10-5 win over Aurora Thursday morning.  The Red Men jumped on top quickly with three runs in the top of the first, combining Mike Petti run scoring double and a RBI single by Zach Kozlowski with a third run scoring on a Spartan error.  Aurora responded with a run off a Josh Davidson single in the bottom of the first.  Tyler Eckmeyer led off the Carthage second with a triple and came home on a ground out to make it 4-1 Carthage.  Aurora took advantage of two Carthage errors to cut the margin to 4-2 after six innings.  In the top of the seventh Petti came through again, provided the winning runs for Carthage with a three-run home run, his second of the year, for a 7-2 lead.  Aurora came right back in the bottom of the seventh with three runs of their own, one on a single by Tim Mackey and two more on a fielder’s choice and error.  Will Hodges’ two run double in the eighth pushed Carthage’s lead back to 9-5, and the Red Men added the final run in the ninth.  Petti accounted for four runs batted in with his two hits, and he scored twice for Carthage.  Mario Perez, 5-3, pitched the first six innings to pick up the win with relief help from Eric Rohe.

Wednesday, 4:00 Game

UW-Stevens Point scored early and often in a 12-1 win over Saint Scholastica in the final game of the day.    Point opened the game with four consecutive hits, the big blow a three run homer by Sam Spurney, his sixth of the season.  The pitching settled in for both teams, posting zeros until UW-SP came to bat again in the fifth, when Jeremy Richter hit a two run home run to make it 6-0.  Richter was at it again in the sixth, driving in two runs with a double to left in the Pointers’ three run inning.  Jared Surman doubled in a run in the eighth, and Dan Douglas brought home two more with a single.  Saint Scholastica avoided the shutout with a run scoring on a double play in the ninth.  Joel Delorit pitched the first seven innings and allowed just two hits to up his record to 8-3 for UW-SP. Spurney and Richter each had three hits for the Pointers, and they combined to drive in seven runs and score six times.

Wednesday, 1:00 Game

There wasn’t a little bit of everything — there was a lot.  Saint Thomas and Carthage combined for twenty runs, twenty-five hits, eleven walks, and four errors in the Tommies’ 14-6 win.  Carthage looked like it was their day, opening the game with three runs in the top of the first.  Zach Kozlowski had the key hit in the inning, a two run single.  The Red Men added another run without the benefit of a hit in the second to go up 4-0.  Brady Field closed most of that gap with a three run homer for UST, his third of the year.  Saint Thomas surged ahead to take the lead for good with four more tallies in the third on a throwing error and RBI singles by Charles Bruchu and Taylor Rahm, and a run scoring double off the bat of Cremisio.  UST added another run in the fourth to go up 8-4.  The Tommies made 9-4 with a run, keyed by two wild pitches, in the sixth.  UST piled it on with five more in the seventh inning, batting around while combining three hits, three walks and a sacrifice.  Carthage came back with two in the eighth, one crossing the plate on a wild pitch and the other on a single by Billy Herrin.  Matt Schuld, 10-1, went eight innings for the win, with relief help from Nick Gervais.  Carthage used four pitchers in the game.  Field led both teams with a 3x4 day, four RBI’s and two runs scored.

Wednesday, 10:00 Game

Riley Tincher kept Aurora at bay for seven innings and UW-Whitewater’s offense went small ball in a 6-1 win in the opening game of the Midwest Regional.  UW-W opened the scoring with an unearned run in the first, and the Spartans responded with three singles in the second to even the score 1-1.  Whitewater scored what proved to be the winning run in the third, with a Jordan Stine single, Stine stealing second base and came around to score on a single and fielder’s choice.  The formula was working, so Whitewater tacked on another in the fourth on three singles, and two in the fifth with the runs coming in on a sacrifice fly and another single.  Not a team to deviate from something that is working, the final run of the game came in the eighth when the Warhawks combined a hit batter, a steal, a single and a sacrifice fly.  At the end of the day Stine was 3x4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases from his leadoff spot, and Daniel Putnam was 3x5 in the number two hole.  Other than the second when Aurora scored, Tincher did not allow a runner to reach second base through six innings.  In the seventh, the Spartans loaded the bases with two outs, but Tincher got out of it with a strikeout.  Tincher, 12-1, allowed six hits, walked one and struck out five.  Eric Schmitz pitched the final two innings.  Steve Salazar, 8-2, took the loss for Aurora.
